Puzzle Break: Halloween Treats

We’ve said before that we are really not competitive puzzlers.  We do like to move quickly but we don’t do competitions because there’s really no point in us being there.

Our local library did their second puzzle race event last weekend, though, and we wanted to get out into the puzzling community, so we were there.

Jenny actually works at the library now so she wasn’t allowed to take part in the competition.  I teamed up with our puzzle friend Yvonne (who was randomly grouped with us last time we did this) and Yvonne’s friend Debbie.  Once again, we were assigned a fourth person who didn’t show up, so we competed as a three-person group.

This time, the design was “Halloween Treats” from Cobble Hill Puzzles.  It’s a super cute design.  I loved the quality.  It felt really good coming together.

Unfortunately, though, we not only did not finish in the top three, we didn’t even get the puzzle done in the time allotted.

I think we simply planned poorly.  Aside from doing the border first (which we couldn’t even complete immediately because we missed some of the edge pieces in our initial sort), we didn’t go in with any particular strategy.  As such, we were stepping on each others toes and moving pieces around on each other.  This design was ripe for sorting by color and we didn’t do that.

Oh well; lessons learned.

With that done, Jenny and I are back to making progress on “Color on the Mountain” at home.
